In recent years, Virginia has gained well-deserved recognition for its vibrant and rapidly growing food scene. Whether you’re interested in working at a local farm-to-table restaurant or a five-star establishment, there are many opportunities for aspiring culinary professionals to pursue throughout the state.
By completing a G3-approved Culinary Arts program, you’ll gain vital skills and hands-on experience, preparing you for a variety of roles in Virginia’s evolving food industry. Whether you prefer creating dishes in the kitchen or overseeing the guest experience behind the scenes, our programs can offer you the opportunity to take your culinary career to the next level.
Here are a few roles you may qualify for through a G3 culinary arts program.
Sous Chef
Second-in-command, a sous chef supports the head chef in various ways, both in and out of the kitchen. They assist with key operations such as menu planning and recipe development. They also supervise the kitchen staff and ensure the line runs efficiently.
Through courses such as International Cuisine and Recipe and Menu Management, you’ll practice techniques for creating diverse menus and learn the foundations of global culinary traditions. You’ll also gain hands-on leadership experience, which will help prepare you to manage kitchen staff and maintain proper food quality and presentation.
Food Service Manager
A food service manager oversees the day-to-day operations of restaurants, catering businesses or other dining establishments. From hiring employees and maintaining food health regulations, to managing budgets and monitoring inventory, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping an establishment running smoothly while providing a positive experience for both your customers and employees.
In a Food and Beverage Cost Control course, you’ll learn the ins and outs of minimizing waste and maximizing profits. Sanitation and Safety will provide foundational knowledge of the moral and legal responsibilities of food service operations, ensuring your establishment meets local, state and federal guidelines at all times.
Private Chef
After completing a G3 Culinary Arts program, you’ll be well-equipped to start your career in private dining. As a private chef, you’ll use your culinary skills to provide an exclusive, luxury dining experience for an individual employer rather than an entire establishment.
Courses like Fundamentals of Wine will teach you how wine pairings can help elevate your customers’ dining experience and enhance overall meal presentation. Additionally, your American Regional Cuisine class will prepare you to create distinct recipes that emphasize the cultural cooking styles of different regions throughout the country.
