Public safety careers are vital to securing the health and safety of our communities—and in Virginia, these roles are more important than ever. From first responders to paralegals and even grief counselors, the impact of these careers goes far beyond what is seen on the frontlines.
The G3 Public Safety program equips you with vital, transferable skills and hands-on experience, preparing you for a high-demand career in public safety while giving you an opportunity to make a real difference in your community.
Here are a few roles that a G3 public safety program can help you break into.
Firefighter
Firefighters serve an important role as first responders to emergency situations such as house and building fires, car accidents and even natural disasters. They also work to prevent fires and other emergencies by performing necessary inspections and equipment maintenance.
Through courses such as Introduction to Structural Firefighting, you will simulate different types of emergencies and learn how to navigate them effectively. You’ll also focus on interpersonal skills and learn proper techniques to work with others to de-escalate high-stress situations.
Social Services Assistant
A social services assistant works with social workers and other professionals to help individuals and families navigate difficult life situations, routinely connecting them with public assistance programs and community resources. They also act as case managers by following up and documenting clients’ progress.
In courses like Human Services, you’ll learn the different types of services and resources available and how to coordinate necessary care depending on their needs. Basic Counseling Skills will teach you to provide emotional support while being sensitive to the situations your clients are navigating.
Forensic Science Technician
A forensic science technician is trained to properly collect, analyze and transport physical evidence from a crime scene to aid in criminal investigations. They write detailed reports and meticulous documentation, which are essential to preparing strong cases for court proceedings.
A G3 Public Safety Program will prepare you through classes such as Principles of Criminal Investigation, where you will learn key investigative procedures and techniques used in real-life forensic work.
Whether you prefer being on the frontlines like a first responder or working behind the scenes, Virginia’s Community Colleges can help you take the first step towards a career in public safety.
