Tips for Taking Care of Your Mental Health in College

G3 Mental Health Blog

Pursuing a degree or certification is an exciting opportunity to learn new skills and prepare for a rewarding career. However, juggling college courses alongside other responsibilities can be challenging. While G3 programs offer flexible pathways to higher education, balancing in-class instruction, hands-on skill demonstrations and certification exam preparation with personal life demands can often feel overwhelming.

As winter settles in, seasonal factors like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) may further contribute to stress and mental health challenges. You might find it harder to concentrate on important tasks like schoolwork, lose interest in activities you typically enjoy or feel a significant drop in your energy levels.

To help protect your mental wellbeing and set yourself up for success this semester and beyond, consider these helpful tips.

Create a Routine

Creating and implementing a routine may seem overwhelming, but it will provide you with a sense of discipline and control. Carving out an hour each day for study time, a midday jog or making a homecooked meal will give you structure and help keep things organized. Find one day a week, possibly a Sunday evening, where you review your schedule and tasks for the coming week so nothing catches you off guard.

Prioritize Your Physical Health

Your health is your wealth, so it’s important to be intentional in how you treat your body. Make sure you’re fueling your system with healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, and getting sufficient sleep and exercise. By taking care of your physical health, you’re laying the foundation for improved mental health.

Practice Stress Management Techniques

If you experience SAD, learning how to effectively manage your stress is one of the best things you can do for yourself. During stressful moments, try practicing deep breathing exercises or meditation for a few minutes to center yourself. Take time to participate in activities you enjoy that help you relax, as they can boost your mood and energy.
