What it Takes to be a…HVAC Technician

G3 HVAC Tech Blog

HVAC technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. As an integral maintenance service to modern businesses and homes, HVAC technicians are in demand across the state and the country.

With an average salary sitting at $25.95 for a HVAC technician in Virginia, HVAC technicians can receive competitive salaries, with room to grow.

But what does a career as a HVAC technician look like, and what are companies looking for in prospective employees?

We chatted with Daniel Martin, HVAC Program Head from Brightpoint, about the qualities that make a great HVAC technician. Here are a few attributes he shared:

Enjoys Hands-on Work

If you enjoy working with your hands, a job in the skilled trades is a great route to consider. HVAC technicians work mostly hands-on, and each day can look different depending on the project. Daniel shared that ideally, technicians are mechanically inclined, and don’t mind getting dirty or working late hours when needed.

Good with Numbers

While HVAC technicians do get their hands dirty, they’re also expected to be good with numbers, and have an understanding of wiring diagrams. Don’t worry too much if math isn’t your strong suit – HVAC programs through Virginia’s Community Colleges prepare you for these daily tasks.

Strong Communication

Because HVAC technicians work on different projects at different locations, being comfortable communicating with others is crucial. Communication is a soft skill that lends itself well to any position, even in more technical industries.

Open to Travel

Daniel shared that even though it would likely be local, it’s important for HVAC technicians to be open to traveling and not expect to work at the same place every day.

Desire to Grow

Last but not least, it’s crucial that HVAC technicians have a desire to keep up with new technologies in the industry. There are many opportunities for growth in this field, so a desire to continue one’s education is an absolute must.
