It feels as though our lives are becoming more digitized every day, so it may not come as a surprise that Information Technology is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. What does this industry look like in our local communities, outside of the big tech giants of Silicon Valley?
According to the Computing Technology Industry Association, the tech workforce is expected to expand by 12 percent here in the Commonwealth, creating more than 28,000 new jobs between 2022 and 2032.
We spoke with two members of the Digital One Technology team to find out what this means for them as a growing technology company, and what they look for in their new employees.
What is Digital One Technology?
Digital One Technology is a full-service technology company located in Lynchburg with operations stretching all over Virginia and into neighboring states.
Their specialists go to different business and residential sites and provide whatever IT services are needed, whether that be installing internet, phone services or simple programs. The company also offers cybersecurity support.
“Cybersecurity has started becoming a top priority for our customers, so now we’re moving into that realm and looking for people with this knowledge and skill set to better protect customers and businesses from being hacked,” said Kristy Clark, Human Resources Assistant at Digital One Technology. “The industry is continually changing and growing, and our business has taken off pretty quickly.”
Digital One currently has around 30 employees, but they’re expecting to double that by the end of 2022.
What does Digital One look for in their employees?
Besides having a technical background and relevant experience, the Digital One team looks for anyone who shows an interest in the field, has a willingness to work under pressure and meet quick deadlines and is excited to be a part of a growing company.
“IT experience is a plus, but it’s not always a determining factor. We’ve talked to people that had amazing IT experience, but they didn’t have a positive attitude, and that would have been a lose-lose situation,” said Candace Phelps, Human Resources Coordinator at Digital One Technology.
“I think the great thing about Digital One, is if someone shows the desire to learn and grow, even if it’s in a somewhat different department, room has been made for them to do that. That helps our company as well as the worker,” said Candace.
What positions are open at Digital One?
Digital One is currently hiring for a level 1 IT Field Service Technician to travel and cover the central Virginia area performing network installations, basic telephone troubleshooting and other IT-related services.
Digital One has also started working with Virginia’s Community Colleges for interns looking to receive credit hours, as well as recent graduates looking for their first job in IT.
